Kapela byla založena v roce 1985 univerzitními studenty. Hot Jazz Band se jmenuje od roku 1989. Název kapely napovídá, že se jedná o autentický klasický jazz, inspirovaný stylem "hot" třicátých let a chicagským stylem let čtyřicátých. Typickou součástí repertoáru kapely jsou i "sladké" melodie. Soubor zahrnuje ještě jednu kapelu - Hungarien Banjo Kings, která představuje nadnárodní kuriozitu.
První důležité vystoupení se uskutečnilo v Budapešti v roce 1987 s newyorským hráčem na bendžo Eddy Davisem, členem kapely Woody Allena. Tento moment byl pro Hot Jazz Band rozhodující. Od roku 1987 bývá častým hostem kapely Gyula Molnár, lídr a klarinetista nejstaršího maďarského dixielandového orchestru. První pozvání na zahraniční vystoupení přišlo v roce 1990, byl to festival New Orleans Jazz Parade v Lyonu.
Pořad Hot Jazz Bandu s názvem "Dixiehajó" (dixielandový parník) se objevil během roku 1993 třikrát v maďarské televizi. V témže roce byla kapela pozvána jedním z nejznámějších amerických časopisů zabývajících se tradičním jazzem, Mississippi Rag, aby vystoupila na věhlasném festivalu "International Bohém Ragtime Jazz Meeting". V březnu 1994 hrál dva týdny s kapelou jako host newyorský trumpetista Tom Kirkpatrick. V květu téhož roku vyhráli mezinárodní soutěž dixielandů v Salgótarjáu. Koncem měsíce hostila kapela v Budapešti velkého francouzského jazzmana Marcela Zanini. Dalším zajímavým hostujícím umělcem byl Joe Muranyi, poslední klarinetista z bývalého orchestru Louise Armstronga. V létě vyhrál Hot Jazz Band jazzovou soutěž Louise Armstronga. V porotě seděli slavní hudebníci jako Acker Bilk, Bob Quibel, Irakli a Daniel Huck...
V březnu hráli v nejstarším evropském jazzovém klubu, v curyšském Casa Baru. V květnu opět získali první cenu v soutěži v Salgótarjánu, hrál s nimi jako host francouzský trumpetista Irakli a holandský bendžista Tom Stuip. V červenci vyhráli první cenu na největší evropské dixielandové soutěži v Saint Raphael ve Francii. V roce 1995 vydali první CD "Hot Jazz Band".
Hot Jazz Band znamená pro tradiční jazz svěží hlas. Kromě vzácně hraných tradicionálů mají v repertoáru i staré maďarské písně. Zdálo by se, že tradiční repertoár kontrastuje s mládím členů kapely, v Maďarsku nemají předchůdce. V čem tedy spočívá tajemství jejich obrovského úspěchu? Mimo hudební kvalitu jistě také v srdečném vztahu mezi nimi a publikem.

Although formed as early as 1985 by university students, the Hot Jazz Band has been active under this name since 1989. This name reveals that the band plays authentic classical jazz, clearly inspired by the "hot" of the 30's and the "Chicago" style of the 40's, but "sweet" melodies are also typical of the repertoire. The group includes also another band, the Hungarian Banjo Kings, which is a curiosity not only nation-wide.
The first important encounter came in Budapest, in 1987, with New York banjo-player Eddy Davis, a member of the actor and director Woody Allen's band. Such moments have been of significance in the career of the Hot Jazz Band. From 1987 on Gyula Molnár, leader and clarinet-player of one of Hungary oldest Dixie bands has been their wellcome guest soloist. The band recieved its first invitation from abroad in 1990 to the New Orleans Jazz Parade in Lyon. The Hot Jazz Band's show titled "Dixiehajó" (Dixie Boat) was on Hungarian TV three times in 1993. Still the same year they were praised as the highlight of the International Bohém Ragtime Jazz Meeting. In May they won a national competition at the Salgótarján International Dixieland Festival. In March 1994 New York trumpet-player Tom Kirkpatrick played as gust-star of the band for two weeks. Later the band featured Marcel Zanini, a great name of French jazz. In the summer of the same year they won the first prize of the invitational Louis Armstrong Jazz Competition. The jury included no lesser figures then Acker Bilk, Bob Quibel, Irakli, Daniel Huck...
They played in one of Europe's oldest jazz clubs, the Casa Bar in Zürich. Then once again they won the national competition at Salgótár. They won the first prize at the greatest European dixieland competition in Saint Raphael, France. They were recorded by Hungarian Radio and by the Hungarian State Television. In 1995 they relleased their first CD album called Hot Jazz band".
Hot Jazz Band is a fresh voice in traditional jazz, owing to the fact, that besides many rarely heard evergreens, some well-known old Hungarian songs belong to their repertoire. Their achievements seem to contradict their young age in a way that is withouth precedence in Hungarian jazz. Where, you may ask, lies the secret of their success?
