Emil Viklický

Emil Viklický se narodil roku 1948 v Olomouci, kde se také už
od dětských let věnoval hře na klavír. Po absolutoriu numerické
matematiky na Přírodovědecké fakultě Palackého univerzity (1971)
a vojenské službě v AUS se zprofesionalizoval jako člen Hulanova
Jazz Sanatoria a rytmiky Linha Singers, odkud v roce 1974 přešel
k SHQ karla Velebného. Souběžně však byl i členem jazz-rockové
skupiny Energit, kterou vedl Luboš Andršt. V červnu 1976 se svou
skladbou "Zelený satén" zvítězil v mezinárodní soutěži jazzových
klavíristů, jejímž dějištěm byl francouzský Lyon, a v témže roce
získal prvenství i za skladbu "Cacharel" v autorské soutěži
Monacké konzervatoře. Jako lídr debutoval v srpnu 1977 autorským
albem "V Holomóci městě", jež pak získalo i výroční cenu etikety
Supraphon, a bezprostředně poté na rok odjel ke stipendijnímu
pobytu na bostonskou Berklee College, při jejímž studiu hojně
účinkoval i po newyorkských klubech (mj. s Joe Newmanem, Scottem
Robinsonem, Tedem Dunbarem a Ronem Bridgewaterem). Po návratu
s tamními spolužáky natočil alba "Okno" a "Dveře", na nichž se
s ním podíleli Bill Frisell, Hermit Driscoll a Vinton Johnson.
V dubnu pak nahrál duové "Together" s Jamesem Williamsem
a průběžně se podílel na deskách SHQ (např. "Parnas"), které
obohacoval i autorsky. Vedle toho, že vedl vlastní kvarteto, byl
ale od roku 1983 zároveň členem mezinárodní čtveřice amerického
trombonisty Lou Blackburna, dlouhodobě spolupracoval
se skandinávskými hudebníky (především s Jarmem Sermiem a Haraldem
Gundhusem), jako sólisa, autor i aranžér spolupracoval s mnoha
čs. big bandy (JOČR, Pražský big Band, Gustav Brom, V. V. Systém
apod.) i s Radio Big Bandem Zürich a jinými evropskými tělesy.
Věnuje se též kompozici filmové a komorní hudby. Během 90. let,
v nichž jeho trio přišlo s několika pozoruhodnými projekty
(po "Hommage to Juan Miró" hlavně s "Round Midnight" a "Bohemia After
Dark") rozvinul širokou spolupráci s belgickým sólistou Stevenem
Houbenem a s moravskými folkloristy Zuzanou Lapčíkovou a Jiřím
Pavlicou, kteří soubor doplnili na kvintetní Moravia ad libitum,
s nímž natočil CD "Prší déšť" a hostoval i v zámoří. Jako sólový
klavírista nahrál však rovněž album "Duets", jež posluchači
rozhlasového čtrnáctideníku Jazz test označili za druhou nejlepší
produkci roku 1998 a na němž byl Viklickému partnerem i Eric
Marienthal, Brit Julian Nicholas nebo význačný pedagog na Berklee
College Greg Hopkins.

Born 1948 in Olomouc (Moravia), where he since his childhood took
piano lessons. After he graduated in numerical mathemathics at
the Palacký University in his hometown and finnished the regular
military service, he becom a member of Luděk Hulan's Jazz
Sanatorium and as a professional pianist went 1974 to Karel
Velebný's SHQ, being at the same time also part of the jazz-rock
oriented group Energit, which was led by Luboš Andršt. In June
1976 Viklický won the International Jazz Piano Centest in Lyon
(France) with his tune "Green Satin", winning at the same year
the composer's contest of the Monaco Conservatory with his title
"Cacharel". The debut album "V Holomóci Městě", which later got
the Annual Prize of the Czech Supraphon label, he published 1977
and devoted completely to his own tunes. Immediately after this
recordings have been nade, he got a one year scholarship on
Boston's famous Berklee College, having than a chance to perform
also in New York's jazz clubs (with Joe Newman, Scott Robinson,
Tedd Dunbar and Ron Bringewater among others). Back home again,
he recorded LP's "Window" and "Door" with some of the Boston
"Schoolmates" incl. Bill Frisell, Hermit Driscoll and Vinton
Johnson, as well as "Together" (1981), on which he met another of
his American friends, the pianist James Williams. All years long
he recorded also with Velebný's SHQ, which repertoary included
a lot of Emil's originals. Besides his work with own quartet he
also plyed in the international group led by late Lou Blackburn,
colaborated with various Scandinavian jazzmen (first of all with
Jarmo Sermila and Harald Gundhus), as a soloist, composer and
arranger took part on different projects by leading Czech and
European big bands and wrote film scoras as well as contemporery
chamber works. During the 90th, in which his trio produced many
interesting CD's (from "Hommage to Joan Miró" up to "Round
Midnight" and "BohemiaAfter Dark"), he began to closely
collaborate with the Belgian sax and flute player Steve Houben as
well as with Moravian folkloristes Zuzana Lapčíková and Jiří
Pavlica, establishing with them a new quintet setting called Ad
libitum Moravia. With the group he released a very succesfull CD
"The Rain Is Falling" and played all over as well as outside of
Europe. As a soloist he recorded also an album of his "Duets"
with Eric Marienthal, British Julian Nicholas and one of the most
important Berklee teachers Greg Hopkins among others - a record,
which was named the second Year's best CD in Czech Republic by
the listeners of radio bi-weekly "Jazz test".
