Hans Lüdemann
Germany
Born 1961 in Hamburg, Germany. 1978/79 AFS-student in Los Angeles, USA. Since
1982 in Köln, Germany. At age 7 studies in classical piano with Lieselotte
Burgdorff, Christel Scheuer and in 1980-81 at Hamburg Conservatory with
Elke Schnadt. Studies in Jazz piano and composition from 1980-82 with
Joachim Kühn, Jasper van't Hof and Walter Norris, 1985/86 at the Banff Centre,
Canada, with Richard Beirach, Anthony Davis, Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Coleman
and Dave Holland. At the Musikhochschule Köln, Germany, from 1982-88 with
Frank Wunsch, Reiner Brüninghaus, Manfred Schoof. Hans Lüdemann was first to
receive a master's degree in Jazz piano in Germany.
Since 1975 in his hometown Hamburg and during his stay in the USA 1987/79 Hans
Lüdemann collected experience with numerous groups including own projects with
Gebhard Ullmann and Andreas Willers. Mostly, the focus was on the realisation of
his own ideas and compositions. This continued in Köln, where Lüdemann worked
intensively with Roger Hanschel and Rainer Linke ("Nana", "Nana-Orchestra",
"Blau Frontal") from 1983-1993. Journeys to West Africa in 1983 and
1988/89 were the starting point for his intensive studies of African music.
Since 1985 Hans Lüdemann has been frequent guest soloist and composer with the
"Jazzensemble des Hessischen Rundfunks" that includes established German Jazz
Masters as Albert Mangelsdorff. On and off since 1988, he has worked with tenor
player Heinz Sauer in duo and quartet. With Eberhard Weber, Jan Garbarek, Ralf
Hübner, in 1986 Lüdemann went on a two month tour of Asia commissioned by the
German Goethe Institute. In 1993, he recorded a duo CD with Paul Bley. Other
artists he has collaborated with over long periods include Mark Feldman, Marc
Ducret, Phil Minton, Steve Argüelles and Gabriele Hasler.
Presently, Lüdemann concentrates on his own projects: The group "Hans Lüdemann
RISM", founded in 1990, which released it's third CD in 1998 and his solo
program "the natural piano", focussing on African influences, started in 1994.
Lüdemann was involved in a great number of CD- and album-releases, international
tv and radio productions, concerts and festival appearances. This includes
concert tours commissioned by the German Goethe Institute as well as important
festivals such as Copenhagen, Barcelona and Berlin. In 1997, Lüdemann was
portrayed at the Musiktriennale Köln, one of the biggest European music
festivals, in two concerts. In 1998, Lüdemann went on a solo tour of "the
natural piano" to the USA, in 1999 on a Goethe Institute tour to West Africa,
where he worked with some outstanding African artists such as Tata Dindin,
Toumani Diabaté and Ali Keita.
This has created new perspectives for the year 2000: A duo program with Tata
Dindin, master of the African Kora-harp from Gambia and a Afro-European trio
with Ali Keita (Balaphon) and Steve Argüelles (drums).
As a composer, Lüdemann has worked for a wide range of instruments and settings,
up to the orchestral work "Geschichte 2" (1988) and "Verloren ins we ite Blau"
("Lost into the wide blue") (1994), a song cycle with large instrumental
ensemble. Aside from these commissions from WDR radio, Lüdemann has composed and
arranged for his own projects, the Jazzensemble des Hessischen Rundfunks and for
SCHOTT publishing. He received a scholarship from the GEMA-foundation in 1987
and a composition grant from "Stiftung Kunst und Kultur NRW" in 1997. Since 1993
Lüdemann is teaching Jazz piano and ensemble at Musikhochschule Köln.
